My dad bought a big flat screen HDTV a few months back. I was so proud of him. He is definitely not a nerd despite having one of the nerdiest middle names around; Eugene.
Since then, though, the DVD player that he bought that upconverted the videos died and he went back to the old normal DVD player. He has had Direct TV for years. He has not bothered to upgrade to the HD receivers like he intended before buying the new TV.
Despite all of that, the picture is just fine. The TV fits that room perfectly and the picture is fine. He has saved a fair amount of money by not upgrading the DVD player after returning it and by not upgrading to a new satellite with higher monthly fees.
With all of the feature bloat that is going on with cell phones and TVs and computers, sometimes it is nice to be reminded that the best buy is to buy the products with the features you plan on using.
For me a cell phone does not need to take pictures, a TV does not need to play Blu-Ray videos, a car doesn’t need to have heated seats. So I will not pay extra for them.
What are the features you are willing to pay extra for? What features do you wish they would stop putting on your favorite products?

“the best buy is to buy the products with the features you plan on using” - very good point and sometimes so difficult for us nerds to do. We all want more power (to quote a certain sitcom from the 90’s - I’m lame), but we’re just playing into the manufacturer’s hands.
Good post!
